Mykonos and Melomakarona

mykonos melomakarona

My second favorite Greek island would have to be Mykonos. This part of our trip was essentially fairytale Greece: sunwashed beaches, gorgeous white houses, unfailingly blue sky. Not to mention the Greeks’ fairly relaxed concept of time…meaning it’s pretty impossible not to feel mellow and lazy after staring at the ocean with lemonade in hand for a couple of hours.

I always forget about the television during summer, so the start of fall programming usually catches me by surprise. Luckily, I got notification about one show I don’t want to miss: the second season of Top Chef Just Desserts is premiering this Wednesday, August 24, on Bravo.

The first season was…exciting, to say the least. The drama got a little over the top, but I was impressed by some of the desserts that some contestants were able to put together under some pretty trying circumstances. I’m looking forward to seeing what refinements the second season will bring, as well as seeing Chefs Johnny Iuzzini and Hubert Keller (le sigh) again.

To get a gander at the contestants for this season, go here.  You can also enjoy these recipes from the Yigit Pura, the winner of Season 1:

Peanut Butter and S’mores Cookie Dough Sundae

Strawberry Sorbet and Lemongrass Ginger Ice Cream

Now the best part- to celebrate the premiere I’m giving away the 5-quart Artisan stand mixer shown at the top of the post, along with this cupcake decorating kit:

These prizes were generously donated by Bravo and I’m happy to pass them on to one lucky reader!

To enter: Leave a comment below with your favorite Top Chef contestant (either from Just Desserts or the original series). I’m going to cheat a little and say I’m partial to the very talented Voltaggio brothers, who came out on top of what I thought was the best season of Top Chef so far (by the way, they have a cookbook coming out this fall, if you haven’t heard!)

This contest will run through Thursday, August 25, and I’ll announce the winner on Friday, August 26. Good luck – and don’t forget Top Chef Just Desserts on Wednesday, August 24!

This prize was provided by the BRAVO Network but BRAVO is not a sponsor, administrator, or involved in any other way with this giveaway. All opinions expressed in the post are my own and not those of BRAVO.

Santorini Sublime

Hi all! A quick shoutout before I get on with my post – the lovely Deborah of Taste and Tell featured me in her Blogger Spotlight a couple weeks ago. Pop on over to visit her beautiful blog and see my answers to her interview questions!

Now we come to one of my absolute favorite stops on our trip – Santorini. It’s fabled as the quintessential Greek paradise, and justly so, as we discovered. Visiting as a daytripper is not the way to truly enjoy this island: you spend your day shoving around town along with all the other cruise-ship tourists trying to make the most of their brief time on short. We did our best to avoid the crowds, but still concluded that it’s best to come when you have a few days – or more than a few days – to relax into the mellow, unhurried pace of this Aegean idyll. Forgive my indulgence with the photos in this post, but really, there were too many to choose from.

{SF} My Favorite Ice Cream Shops in San Francisco

August 5th, 2011 · 9 Comments · Reviews, San Francisco, Sweet Spots, Sweet Spots

Typical menu board at Mr. and Mrs. Miscellaneous. Flavors change daily – another incentive to visit often.

By popular request and in an attempt to populate the “San Francisco” tab on my site, I’ve created a list of my favorite ice cream spots in San Francisco. Of course, I started this last week when it was bright, sunny, and warm (these three conditions are not always simultaneous in San Francisco), but naturally now it’s back to Fog City again. No matter – in SF ice cream consumption is rarely tied to the current weather but rather to the pure desire to have a cone filled with something sweet, frozen, and really, really delicious.

I’ve only listed ones that I’ve been to personally, as is only fair. However, as eating ice cream is one of my very favorite activities, and as there seems to be no shortage of ice cream shops both classic and artisan opening up in SF, rest assured this list will continue to be updated (with more photos, as well!) Feel free to give your own recommendations in the comments as well – there’s always room for more ice cream.
