Strawberry and Marshmallow Ice Cream in Alessi Big Love
Hello! I'm excited to announce a collaboration between Dessert First and Alessi for the month of May: four recipes by me, photographed in some of Alessi's beautiful and distinctive pieces.
This partnership came about a couple months when I was invited to preview some of Alessi's newest pieces for spring and summer. I've long been a fan of Alessi's designs, which range from playful and whimsical to elegant and timeless.
After expressing my long-standing enthusiasm for Alessi's products, I was thrilled when the company asked if I'd like to pick out several items and feature them in my posts. Alessi has a long history of creative collaboration with not just designers but other creative artists. While they have commissioned recipes to go with their products, they don't have many dessert recipes. I was happy to step up and help fill in that gap.

Three weeks into motherhood and I’ve noticed how time has taken on a particularly elastic quality. I spend literally the entire day at home: I’ll go through several rinse-and-repeat cycles of feeding, changing, and lulling baby to sleep, and yet somehow it’s always a surprise to look outside and see the sky darkening already. Has she already fed that many times today? What did I have for lunch? Did I even eat lunch? Is that a half-written e-mail on my computer from this morning? Or was it from yesterday? What day is it, anyway? (Very fitting that Groundhog Day was a few days ago, as that’s how I feel these days!)

Well, it’s finished! Stephanie and I have officially sent off the first issue of sated magazine to the printers! I can’t tell you what a big sigh of happiness we heaved when we finally reached that milestone. After months of long nights, intense work (and re-work), we can say we accomplished the first step of that goal we set for ourselves months ago: to create a new, beautiful, food magazine.
Thanks to everyone who’s expressed their support and well wishes, and thanks to everyone who’s already pre-ordered! It definitely gave us that extra boost of motivation to finish the first issue and make it as perfect as possible, knowing there were already so many people waiting to see it.

Taking a brief break from vacation recapping…just a few more stops left to cover! I swear I’ll finish my vacation scrapbook before summer is over!
I couldn’t not post about stone fruit season and the sunset-hued wave of fruits enveloping farmers’ markets right now. If you haven’t bitten into a ripe, outrageously fragrant autumn plum yet, do so. I have a soft spot for Elephant Hearts, but most any variety will do, including the increasingly odd-named hybrid cousins of plums.
Pluots, I can get behind (they’re a big favorite of mine). Or plumcots (essentially the same thing, a cross between plums and apricots). But some other mixes I find a little less mellifluous to my ear: aprium? peacotum? nectaplum? They just don’t have the same appetizing ring. It reminds me of when we went looking for a dog to adopt and discovered all these non-official cross breeds. I knew about goldendoodles and labradoodles, but the mention of shih-poos and whoodles just made me laugh. Not all portmanteaus are meant to be, at least to my ears.
